Welcome to Tangled Carrot Farm

Our Vision

Tangled Carrot Farm envisions a community nourished by sustainably grown food and a deeper connection to the land. We steward the soil with care so that we can grow high-quality, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

Our Expertise

Sustainable Farming Practices

At Tangled Carrot Farm, we prioritize sustainability and environmental stewardship in every aspect of our farming operations. Our methods include crop rotation, drip irrigation, cover cropping, companion planting and permaculture techniques to ensure the health of our soil and the quality of our produce. All of our products are grown without synthetic chemicals or fertilizers.

We work to steward our land and build resiliency for today's generation and for the generations that follow. Tangled Carrot Farm currently cultivates a half-acre of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers, while remediating three acres of pasture. Find us at the Stevensville Harvest Valley Farmer's Market on Saturdays in May and from July- October or at their farmstand.

Origins & Purpose

A farm that gives back.

Tangled Carrot Farm, LLC was started in 2019 by farmer Sarah with plans to serve the community from an acre of diversified fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. When an opportunity arose for Sarah to advance local and sustainable food efforts within a large healthcare system, the farm intentionally scaled back to make space for this meaningful work, while still building the business.

Sarah's commitment to food justice and food‑system transformation shows up in her work on the farm, in her service as a board member for Missoula Food Bank & Community Center, and in her efforts to increase access to healthy food in healthcare. The farm remains a living expression of her care for the land and her community, where she puts her values into action each season alongside her husband and farm partner, Joe Fortier.

About Your Farmers.

Sarah E. Johnson

Co-founder, Main Farmer

Sarah fell in love with farming by accident after working on Killarney Farm in North Idaho. What was supposed to be one season turned into a passion and career. She convinced Joe to stay in the West, buy farmland, and start a family.

Sarah is a nurse by background and combines her attention to detail with her love of caring deeply for people and the planet. She’s passionate about growing food in ways that build the health of the soil and her community.

Co-founder, Chief Problem Solver

After staring at farmland through satellite imagery in Washington DC, Joe made his way to Idaho to get his hands dirty as an apprentice at Green Tree Naturals and was introduced to Sarah by a mutual farming friend. He has supported her farming passion ever since.

Joe combines operational excellence with a deep understanding of technology to ensure that irrigation, infrastructure, and financial operations of the farm are well managed. His quick wit keeps everyone’s spirits high on the farm.
